  • Chicago Bulls are FRAGILE (Even though they beat the Cavaliers as the pod was recorded)
  • CT keeps calling the Charlotte Hornets the Bobcats
  • The Cleveland Cavaliers might not get the No. 1 seed
  • So where do the Wizards end up landing in this mess?
  • NBA predictions with no explanation

  • Duncan returns from his sweatshop empire in Puerto Rico
  • Aside from Cleveland, the East is wide open
  • Preseason update: Wizards are 4-1, playing uptempo on offense

  • Martell Webster is dealing with arthritis in his hip, hasn’t played at all
  • Jared Dudley planning on playing in one of or both the last two preseason games

  • Did Seraphin’s signing to the Knicks move Carmelo Anthony’s needle (8===>)?

  • Alan Anderson has ankle surgery, again
  • Gary Neal is a nice upgrade at shooting guard, can provide some scoring off the bench
  • Kelly Oubre Jr. might play a little more than expected, could be frustrating to watch. Randy Wittman could be quick with the hook
  • The guys are bummed to see Bobby Portis averaging double digit rebounds in the preseason for the Bulls, would’ve like to see the Wizards draft him
  • Let’s hope the Wizards really stick to a change in offensive style, if for no other reason than to play to John Wall’s strengths
  • The guys try and hold off on drooling about John Wall, but can’t help themselves
  • Should be the second best player in the Eastern Conference, could be a fringe MVP candidate
  • Dave’s been texting and Snapchatting John, saying he’s completely focused on the preseason and keeps wearing suits around town
  • It’s a contract year for Bradley Beal, leading the team in scoring would really take a load off Wall
  • Marcin Gortat now wants to be called the Polish Gazelle, changed his number and was an advocate for “smaller ball” at the end of last season
  • Gortat is the most consistent player on the team outside of Wall, it hurts him to play with Nene
  • Nene is a big question mark on this year’s team. How is he going to handle coming off the bench to play center?
  • Nene and Gortat vs. Zach Randolph and Marc Gasol would be an epic tag team wrestling match-up
  • Watch this Stone Cold Steve Austin Stunner compilation
  • CT had a lot of hot takes on wrestling as a sixth grader, could’ve done a podcast
  • Kris Humphries is probably going to the be starting power forward, has been taking a lot of threes during the preseason.

  • Duncan tried to temper Otto expectations, but is starting to drink the Kool Aid
  • If you shout out the podcast on Twitter, we’ll give you a shoutout on the show
  • Franzia is sponsoring the soundboard — “Franzia: Drink inside the box"

  • If you’re a middling player or a scrub in the NBA, do you up your stats in NBA2K?
  • Dave wants to talk about the blockbusters being released this holiday season, the podcast decides they’re into young adult fiction adaptations

  • Going way back, the guys recap the Wizards Summer League performance, Kelly Oubre Jr.’s play. Oubre is the only person who will be on the team, so really nothing to see here
  • Hasheem Thabeet being ejected was the moment of the Summer League, they guess his career earnings

A Midsummer Night's Pod

Today on ZardCast, CT and Dave throw the cans on and hop into the pod to discuss all the Washington Wizards offseason goings on. They hit on everything: The Wizards moving up to select Kelly Oubre Jr., Ernie Grunfeld fending off instinct and drafting an actual player (Aaron White from Iowa) in the second round, Paul Pierce’s departure, Jared Dudley appearing out of thin air on the last year of his contract and the signing of former Towson star Gary Neal.

Plus: A news break with Drew Gooden resigning with the Wizards, Alan Anderson joins the squad, Dave and CT want to show Oubre a good time in D.C., University of Maryland legend Dez Wells joins the Wizards summer league team, touching on the DeAndre Jordan drama, doubts about Randy Whitman’s ability to handle Oubre, Grunfeld drafting a second rounder is like sitting through the dentist and much more.

We’ll be back later this month/early August to talk more offseason and some check in on the summer league.

Two Hours of Power PART 2 (End of Season Zard Party)

Today on ZardCast, because the season has officially come to an end, CT, Dave and Duncan have convened to say goodbye to the 2014-15 Washington Wizards by participating in a power hour. This is part two of two.

After the first hour, the guys agree to press on into the night, talking all things Zards, a litany of NBA topics and all other matters of life as the show eventually go off the rails.

Now that the offseason has begun, ZardCast is taking a step back and will record monthly until the 2015-16 season is upon us. Then, the plan is to return to our usual once-weekly schedule.

Thanks to all those who listened throughout the season. It was a lot of fun, and watching that basketball team of ours wasn’t all that shabby either. We can’t wait to be back weekly next season when John Wall wins the MVP and the Wizards win the NBA title!

CT and Duncan are joined by Jake Whitacre from Bullets Forever and Adam McGinnis from Truth About It to breakdown the final game of the season and all of the early offseason story lines that have percolated during the past few days.

ZardCast will be back Tuesday with CT, Duncan, Dave and Max recapping the Wizards season while completing a power hour. That will be ZardCast’s final show of the regular season, as the guys switch to recording once a month until the 2015/16 season is imminent.

Topics discussed include:

  • Where were you when the Wizards bowed out of the playoffs?
  • What stage of grieving are you at?
  • Game 6 was weird, ended a half second away from overtime
  • It’s incredibly depressing to watch the Hawks and Cavaliers in the Eastern Conference Finals — Who are you rooting for?
  • Brad Beal was in Kyle Korver’s head, played an incredible series
  • Also had some audacious statements after the game
  • The trauma revolving around the end of game five and how there was still hope after a tough loss
  • Why did the Wizards lose the series?
  • What gives with Kris Humphries? Why did he never play? Non-basketball fans are big on him
  • What is everyone doing in the offseason?
  • Addressing Marcin Gortat’s comments on his personal struggles mid-year, and on playing without Nene and with a stretch-four
  • Will Nene go along with playing a different role in his final year on the books with the Wizards?
  • What does everyone think Gortat’s personal problem was? Girl probz?
  • People coming out of the weeds for cash?
  • Kevin Seraphin is probably leaving D.C. #KSLife will be missed
  • The podcast has a new sponsor: Q-Tips
  • How great was Paul Pierce? He’s got to be back, right? He gives the Wizards freedom and constrains them at the same time
  • “This Week in John Wall”
  • John makes the NBA all-defense team, but is snubbed from all tiers of the All-NBA team
  • Why did he get snubbed? Who should he have leaped?
  • Why has there been such a negativity about John throughout his career? It doesn’t match up to his personality or his play
  • Otto Porter’s revelation in the playoffs was one of the big positives coming out of this postseason. Have we seen his ceiling? How good can he be?
  • Would you trade Otto for DeMarcus Cousins?

Zards Lose Game 5, John Wall Returns, Al Horford is a Bama (Nothing Matters)

Today on ZardCast, CT and Dave dejectedly sit on their living couch and sort through a wild game five that saw the Washington Wizards slip to the brink of elimination against the Atlanta Hawks, falling to 3-2 in the series. They discuss the return of John Wall, Paul Pierce’s near-game-winning three, Al Horford’s destruction and dagger, overall ugliness and much more.

May 12, 2015

Today on ZardCast, CT, Dave and Malcolm sit down following the Wizards 106-101 loss to the Atlanta Hawks in game four of the Eastern Conference semifinals. The guys discuss how the Wizards stayed within striking distance throughout, despite a humming Hawks offense. They talk emotional hangovers, atrocious defense, turnover problems, Paul Pierce nearly perfect from three, the specialness of Brad Beal, Colin Cowherd’s latest John Wall comments and much more.

Topics discussed include:

  • The Hawks offense was humming early on
  • Dave feels like he’s been on a roller coaster, says even the bad that happened tonight is fixable
  • Malcolm goes to Miami, says it was probably tough for the Wizards to come out firing on all cylinders after the emotional highs of game three
  • Paul Pierce misses a shot to tie it with only a few seconds left in the game
  • So tough to watch these games and not think of what they’re missing with John Wall out
  • Dave thinks many of Wizards the problems stem from turning the ball over on offense, allowing the Hawks to get out and run
  • Wizards were atrocious defensively in the first half, allow 65 points
  • Will Bynum and Ramon Sessions flying to the basket was working to an extent, but doesn’t seem sustainable
  • Malcolm implores everyone to never take Wall for granted again, was probably the best player in the playoffs before he got injured
  • Dave’s upbeat about the Wizards as a fundamentally different team from the regular season, still in the series
  • Marcin Gortat can’t play any worse than he did tonight
  • Nene came to play again, Hawks had trouble handling his physicality
  • Al Horford is a beast
  • Brad Beal scores 34, is a special player
  • Otto Porter has his worst game of the playoffs
  • Wizards down 10 at half
  • Wizards shooting themselves in the foot every time they’d get close to tying the game
  • John Wall looking sharp on the sidelines, engaged with his teammates on the sideline
  • The second “Will John Wall be back if the Wizards make the Eastern Conference finals” conversation in two days, Malcolm gives his take on it
  • Wizards aren’t getting any credit for how good they’re playing, more about how poor their opponents played
  • Colin Cowherd at it again, saying John Wall can’t win a championship because he’s too short
  • Beal is right there with LeBron James in a lot of age-related records
  • There is value for Beal in Wall being out and having a chance to be “the guy”
  • Wizards make their final run at the Hawks in the fourth quarter, have some good chances to tie it up in the final few minutes, Pierce misses an open three with less than 10 seconds left to tie it up
  • Washington is in a good place mentally, attitude-wise — Especially compared to a 60-win Hawks team
  • Malcolm is worried about the game-to-game turnaround on the back end of the series
  • CT is headed to Preakness on Saturday
May 11, 2015

Today on ZardCast, CT, Dave and Duncan convene to discuss a wild night in the Phone Booth as the John Wall-less Washington Wizards take game three against the Atlanta Hawks, dominating most of the game and winning on a Paul Pierce buzzer-beater after blowing a 21 point lead in the fourth quarter.

Topics discussed include:

  • Come to ZardCast for basketball talk, stay for numbers
  • Duncan, CT and Max go to game three, Max sits with a random older woman, gets to sit courtside
  • Paul Pierce hits a buzzer-beater to beat the Hawks in game three, 103-101
  • Replaying the call of Pierce hitting the shot
  • Dave thought they had it the whole time, CT was expecting a letdown, Duncan was blown away that the Wizards dominated for three quarters
  • Nene is like the weather and Saturday was a perfect spring evening for him
  • Duncan’s reasoning for going to the game was low-risk, high-reward if the Wizards get blown out or play well — That pays off and the Phone Booth was live
  • CT thinks this performance most resembled a regular season Wizards game
  • Will Bynum sighting! He played well too!
  • There was a Hawks fan in CT and Duncan’s section yelling “Let’s go Hawk!” — Purposefully singular
  • The guys are still baffled by Drew Gooden, love when he’s playing well
  • Reflecting on the “rappers representing teams” conversation on a previous pod, Duncan notes Kanye West was hyping up the Chicago Bulls. Wale nowhere to be found this playoffs, could use some national spotlight shine
  • Dennis Schroder calls Pierce’s shot “lucky”
  • Playing the Randy Wittman audio of him yelling at Michael Lee
  • The guys defend Michael Lee, Wittman sounds like he’s arguing with his significant other — “I don’t lie! I just don’t tell you everything!”
  • Any chance John Wall comes back this series? Would he come back for the Eastern Conference finals
